(1)Practice in Agriculture

It is expected that the importance of food security will continue to raise in the future due to the increase of the world's population and the impact of unusual weather. Through the use of our beer yeast agricultural materials, we aim to contribute to a sustainable society by promoting an environment-conserving agriculture and plants productivity.

Promote root and plant growth, increase the innate stress tolerance and resistance to diseases, promote photosynthesis, tree's nutrient accumulation, soil improvement and soil reduction

1) Promote root growth of plants and enhance soil microorganism flora In a strawberry field in Tochigi Prefecture, by applying an ”beer yeast agricultural materials", plant physiology was activated and we could observe root growth and less production decline during harvest season. And with reduced iro (Fe 2+) in soil, we observed the enhancement in soil microorganism which led to healthy plants throughout growing season.

2) Increased yield and improved quality of wine grapes in Japan The Watanabe field, located in the Kaminoyama district of Yamagata Prefecture, originally had poor soil and it was difficult for roots to develop. In order to restore the vine trees, the farmer applied ”beer yeast agricultural materials" and the soil condition and the tree were improved, the harvest amount has increased by about 1.5 times compared to the previous years."

The Makiokakurashina field in Yamanashi Prefecture, "beer yeast agricultural materials" were applied to enhance the soil, which increased the immunity of the vines and strengthened their resistance to diseases. The Chardonnay had received less disease damage and in 2019, the amount of spoiled fruit was reduced to one sixth compared to the previous year.

3) Revitalization of agriculture and increasing food self-sufficiency rate by utilizing abandoned paddy rice fields and abandoned farmland In recent years, there has been a need to convert rice paddy field to grow other crops because of decreased demand of rice in Japan. But due to the difficulty to grow other crops in paddy rice field and the additional necessity to improve drainage and enhancement of the original soil, there often becomes abandoned farmland and it is becoming a problem.
JA Gifu and the Support Ibi in Gifu prefecture has succeeded in growing sweet potatoes which are said to grow only in well-trained soil without huge drainage investment at originally paddy rice field. They used "beer yeast agricultural materials" to promote root system of sweet potatoes and improved the growing conditions.
They observed that sweet potatoes were harvested two weeks earlier than usual, and the total crop was about 1.3 times more than the previous year.

4) We have succeeded to grow upland rice with the Fukuda Farm in Abashiri, Hokkaido on "the Project to grow upland rice with Beer Yeast agricultural materials" in approximately 3a area. This project aims to revitalize the local community and agriculture by planting rice seeds and harvesting rice together with local children. Our plan is to increase the participation of local growers and to expand the scale of upland rice cultivation, with the goal of providing locally produced rice to local elementary school lunches.
It was adopted as a project of the Abashiri Junior Chamber with the aim of creating potential value in Abashiri by solving local issues with parents and children. In April, they invited parents and children participants at the elementary school in Abashiri City, and in May, the activities began and they planted Hokkaido rice "Nanatsuboshi". In July, parents and children watched how to spray "beer yeast agricultural materials" over the growing rice field by drone and mowing around that area by machine. This year, the rice did not grow well due to the unusual weather, but we could harvest some rice on November 6th, and we cooked and ate the rice together with the parents and children on November 28th."

5) Reduction of the damage to rice by Golden Apple snail Golden Apple snails inhabit not only in Japan but also in other warm regions in the world and it gives severe damage to paddy rice farmers as they tend to eat young and emerging rice plants right after planted. In recent years, the area of their habitat is expanding due to the global warming and this is becoming serious problem in rice farming areas.
JA Gifu (located in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture) investigated whether it is possible to reduce the damage caused by Golden Apple snails by using ”beer yeast agricultural materials” in paddy rice cultivation.
”Beer yeast agricultural materials” also promotes ferrous uptake of plant. Applying ”beer yeast agricultural materials” to paddy rice plants has resulted in reducing the damage by Golden Apple snails as it promotes good growth of hairy root and the plant absorbed good amount of ferrous. It is known that a group of mollusks, which Golden Apple snails are categorized, tend not to eat plants with many ferrous.
The paddy rice field nearby which this agricultural material was not applied had damage about 20% by Golden Apple snails whereas almost no damage were observed at rice paddy field with beer yeast agricultural materials. We suppose that this beer yeast agricultural materials could be a preventative method from Golden Apple snail's damage.
